  • Mum Restarting Your Career After Divorce?

As a mother going through a divorce, you may find yourself either wanting or needing to re-enter the workforce. Either way, it can be a daunting prospect. Here are 5 ways to help make restarting your career a successful process.

Be Careful What You Think
If you think you can, you will. If you think you can’t, you won’t. Your self-talk is key to creating your new life so be your best supporter rather than your worst critic.

Don’t Be Stuck in the Past
You may have been at the top of your game 5 years ago, but things will have moved on since then.  Employers are people too, and will understand if your skills aren’t up to date because you’ve been out of the workforce.  Help them to employ you by showing them you are willing to learn. Take some courses, read some books, visit skills websites, volunteer then add this to your CV.

Flattery Will Get You Everywhere
This is the time to re-visit your contacts, even if you haven’t seen them in a while. Think of them as your support team and tell them that’s what they are to you. They will be much more willing to help if you’re honest and genuine about your intentions.  Explain what you see in them that may help you so they can help you better.

Get Clear
Getting really clear about what you want, and how each person in your support team can help you will lead you closer to a job than you can ever imagine. Time and time again I see the world move aside to create the perfect job opportunity for clients who are clear and confident.

Find Your Confidence
The chances are your confidence has gone into hiding. You may want to get a date (preferably one who is ten years younger), go to a pole dancing class, or take up scuba diving. In other words, do whatever it takes to get out of your comfort zone and visit the ‘Lost and Found’ section of your memory bank. Remembering how confidence feels will be worth it, and if you take up my suggestions you may even have fun along the way!

And Mums, even if your return to work is sooner than planned, your kids will still love you and you will always be the best Mum in the world to them. Nothing will ever change that.
